White House counselor Kellyanne Conway repeatedly said Sunday that President Donald Trump has not discussed firing Special Counsel Robert Mueller.
ABC host George Stephanopoulos directly asked Conway whether Trump would commit to not dismissing Mueller, who is leading the probe into Russian interference in the 2016 election.
There have been multiple reports that Trump and his aides have considered the possibility; short-lived White House communications director Anthony Scaramucci said he had advised Trump against doing so.
"Bottom line, Kellyanne. Does the president commit to not firing Robert Mueller?" Stephanopoulos asked.
"The president has not even discussed that," Conway said. "The president is not discussing firing Bob Mueller."
"But will he commit not to fire?" Stephanopoulos asked.
"He has not discussed firing Bob Mueller," she said again.
"That's not what I'm asking," Stephanopoulos said.
"Hold on. I'm not the president's lawyer here. What I will tell you as his counselor, he's not discussing that," Conway said.
She said the White House would continue to cooperate with Mueller's probe and get closer to the conclusion that Trump and his team had not colluded with the Kremlin.
