Hillary Clinton hedged on a promise not to raise taxes on middle-class families during her appearance on ABC's This Week on Sunday, saying it was her "goal" not to do so but falling short of actually promising.
"You're also saying no tax increases at all on anyone earning under $250,000," host George Stephanopoulos said. "Is that a rock-solid, 'Read My Lips' promise?"
"Well, it certainly is my goal, and I've laid it out in this campaign," Clinton said. "It's something that President Obama promised, it's something my husband certainly tried to achieve, because I want Americans to know that I get it. A lot of the losses that they experienced because of the Great Recession are still really pulling them down."
Stephanopoulos' "read my lips" remark referred to the pledge by George H.W. Bush in 1988 that there would be no new taxes during his administration, a promise he broke and a key element in Bill Clinton's successful bid to defeat him in the 1992 presidential election.
Stephanopoulos, of course, worked on that campaign and worked in the White House under Clinton. He also made donations to the Clinton Foundation, a story uncovered by the Free Beacon and a tidbit he disclosed to viewers at the beginning of his interview with Hillary Clinton.
