Former press secretary for Sen. Bernie Sanders' (I., Vt.) 2016 presidential campaign Symone Sanders and political commentator Kayleigh McEnany engaged in a heated exchange during CNN's "New Day" on Wednesday. The debate centered on the "Day Without A Woman" strike, and whether it is inclusive to all women.
"These women do not speak for me or many conservative women," McEnany said.
Sanders pushed back, arguing the power of protest and the importance of making people uncomfortable.
"I say that power conceives nothing without a struggle and without protests. And so protests and demonstrations are designed to make people uncomfortable. So I hope a 'Day Without a Woman' today makes people uncomfortable," Sanders said.
"If we want to be honest here, let's call it a day without liberal women," McEnany said. "These women who have organized this march have specifically excluded pro-life women."
The conversation shifted to the funding of Planned Parenthood, and McEnany said that conservatives do not want to reduce funding for women's health care.
"I don’t want to take away any funding. I want to redirect that funding to other institutions that don’t perform abortions. [Planned Parenthood] killed 327,000 babies in 2014, and a lot of women don’t stand for that," she said.
Sanders defended Planned Parenthood, concluding, "No one is telling a man what to do with his penis. I don’t understand why my uterus and vagina is so much a topic of conversation."
