60 Minutes Reporter: Hard to Remember the Last Time the World Was in So Much Chaos

July 17, 2016

60 Minutes correspondent Lesley Stahl remarked it was difficult to remember a time the world was in as much chaos as now during her interview with the Republican presidential ticket of Donald Trump and Mike Pence.

Trump announced the Indiana governor as his running mate on Friday, and the two sat for a joint interview that will air in its entirety Sunday night. In the aftermath of the most recent Islamic State-inspired terrorist attack in France that left 84 dead, the ISIS-inspired massacre of 49 people at a gay Orlando nightclub, the massacre of five Dallas police officers by a racist killer, two fatal shootings of African-American men by white policemen and frayed overall race relations in the United States, Stahl asked the duo if they were prepared to inherit such a dangerous environment.

"I don't know if you can remember the last time we have seen a world this much in chaos," Stahl said. "You even said it was spinning apart. Are you both—are you ready for this world that we are facing today?"

"We're both ready," Trump said. "I have no doubt. We need toughness. We need strength. Obama's weak. Hillary's weak, and part of it is that, a big part of it."

Pence said the larger issue was "declining American power in the world."

"I truly do believe that history teaches that weakness arouses evil, and whether it be the horrific attack in France, the inspired attacks here in the United States, the instability in Turkey that led to a coup, I think that is all a result of a foreign policy of Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama that has led from behind and that has sent an inexact, unclear message about American resolve," Pence said.
