Two Americans were shot and killed and two more injured during a gun attack at a police training center in Jordan on Monday.

NBC News reported that the attack, carried out by a Jordanian police officer, occurred at the Jordan International Police Training Center, which receives funding from the United States and was set up to train Iraqi police. Two American contractors were killed, along with one of their colleagues from South Africa.

Jordanian government spokesman Mohammad Momani said a total of six people were wounded in the gun attack, two of them American and four Jordanian. The attacker gunned down the individuals in the cafeteria of the training center, which is located outside of Jordan’s capital, Amman.

Momani also stated that the Jordanian attacker was killed in the incident, which occurred on the 10th anniversary of the 2005 suicide bombings on Jordan hotels.

State Department spokesman John Kirby said the U.S. agency was aware of a "security incident" at the facility.

"We are in contact with the appropriate Jordanian authorities, who have offered their full support," Kirby said.

The U.S. embassy in Jordan has warned U.S. citizens to avoid the area.
