The State Department released a travel warning Monday, alerting American travelers of possible chemical attacks on civilians in Syria.
U.S. citizens in Syria also face an increased threat of kidnappings, bombings, murder, and terrorism, according to the State Department.
"No part of Syria should be considered immune from violence," the State Department said. "And the potential exists throughout the country for hostile acts, including kidnappings and the use of chemical warfare against civilian populations."
Americans currently in Syria are unable to leave the country by air due to pro-government and rebel clashes near the Damascus and Aleppo airports. Americans in Syria will not be able to receive protection from the U.S. embassy due to its closing in February 2012.
