Hayden: CIA Reception of Pompeo Has Been 'Warm'

December 12, 2016

Former CIA Director Michael Hayden confirmed Monday on MSNBC's Morning Joe that the CIA has reacted positively to President-elect Donald Trump's choice of Rep. Mike Pompeo (R., Kan.) to head the intelligence agency.

Jeremy Peters of the New York Times asked Hayden, who is also a retired four-star general and former NSA chief, what he had heard about the CIA's reception of Pompeo.

"Tell me about what you are hearing from inside the CIA right now as to how they are responding to Pompeo?" Peters asked. "I think my colleague David Sanger alluded to this earlier, so far it has been a pretty warm reception. Is that what you're hearing as well?"

"That's exactly what I'm hearing," Hayden responded.

Trump's transition team announced on Nov. 18 that the president-elect would nominate Pompeo to serve as his director of the CIA. Pompeo currently represents the fourth congressional district in Kansas and is a U.S. Army veteran who graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and later Harvard Law School.
