A suicide attack near the Bagram Airfield, the largest U.S. military facility in Afghanistan, killed six NATO troops Monday, all of them American, according to a U.S. defense official.

The Associated Press reported the attack, which NATO has said killed six of its foreign soldiers and wounded three others. According to Fox News, all six of the troops killed were American, and two U.S. troops and an interpreter were also wounded in the attack.

U.S. officials earlier told NBC News that American troops were among those killed and wounded.

Earlier, the Los Angeles Times, citing an Afghan official, reported that at least three U.S. service members were among those dead in the suicide car bombing. NATO had not yet confirmed the victims’ nationalities.

According to Brig. Gen. William Shoffner, head of public affairs at NATO’s Resolute Support base in Kabul, said that the suicide attack occurred around 1:30 p.m. local time close to the Bagram Airfield. The Taliban claimed in an email to the AP that it was responsible for the deadly attack.

This represents the deadliest attack on foreign troops in more than four months.
