Democratic congressman Al Green (Texas) is filing articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump over the president's proposal to have the United States "take over" and rebuild Gaza.
"The movement to impeach the president has begun. I rise to announce that I will bring articles of impeachment against the president for dastardly deeds proposed and dastardly deeds done," Green said Wednesday morning on the House floor.
Green is calling for impeachment three months earlier than he did during Trump's first term. The Texas Democrat made multiple failed attempts to impeach Trump, calling for impeachment as early as May 2017 and officially filing articles in December 2017, January 2018, and July 2019. Each attempt was overwhelmingly blocked by the House, with 137 Democrats joining Republicans to block Green's July 2019 proposal.
While Green's attempts were unsuccessful, the House under Democratic leadership impeached Trump twice—first in December 2019, over his alleged attempt to solicit foreign interference in the 2020 presidential election, and again in January 2021, for his alleged role in the Capitol riot. The Senate acquitted Trump both times.
Trump unveiled his Gaza plans during a White House press conference on Tuesday with Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu. "The U.S. will take over the Gaza Strip. … We'll own it and be responsible for dismantling all of the dangerous, unexploded bombs and other weapons on the site," Trump said, vowing to "create an economic development."
Hamas's Oct. 7, 2023, attack on Israel prompted an Israeli offensive in Gaza aimed at dismantling the terrorist group. The fighting has left much of Gaza uninhabitable, with the United Nations estimating that 90 percent of Gaza's population has been displaced.
The United States, Trump added, would help relocate "the 1.8 million Palestinians living in Gaza, ending the death and destruction."
