Steve Moore Explains How to Make Mexico Pay for the Border Wall

January 26, 2017

A former economic adviser to Donald Trump explained Wednesday on Fox News how the president could make Mexico pay for his vaunted wall on the U.S.-Mexican border.

Trump reiterated in an interview with ABC News aired the same day that he will build the wall and Mexico is still going to pay for it. He added, however, that U.S. taxpayer money will be used to jumpstart construction on the project.

"I'm just telling you there will be a payment," Trump said. "It will be in a form, perhaps a complicated form."

Moore appeared on "America's News HQ" and described how it is possible that Mexico could pay for the wall.

He said one possibility is through an import tariff, where the funds would directly go to pay for the border barrier.

Moore said he does not believe this is a preferable strategy, however, although he noted that Trump could do this without congressional approval.

Another option Moore laid out is to have a border crossing fee for anyone who enters the U.S from Mexico.

"It's sort of like a user fee. You're using the border, so therefore you pay for security at the border," he said.
