Rep. Loretta Sanchez: Donald Trump on SNL is Like Yelling 'Fire' in a Crowded Theater

November 3, 2015

Rep. Loretta Sanchez (D., Calif.) is not okay with Donald Trump hosting Saturday Night Live this weekend, likening his appearance to someone yelling "Fire" in a crowded theater.

Sanchez said that Trump's appearance would be damaging to Mexicans, Mexican-Americans, and Latinos.

Sanchez took issue with Trump's comments and said that in the past SNL has normally had presidential candidates doing a skit but not take up the whole hour for hosting. Sanchez called his appearance an "affront" to the Latino community.

Brooke Baldwin turned the conversation around on Sanchez and asked if it was free speech for producers of SNL to book Trump for just a sketch or for the entire show, just as it was her right to not tune in. Sanchez said that Baldwin was correct but likened having Trump host the show to running into a crowded theater and yelling fire.

"Well in the same way I believe in free speech, you're correct from that standpoint except for you're not allowed to go into an auditorium and yell, fire, fire, fire. In the same way I believe it is up to SNL to understand that when they put a Donald Trump in front of people and he says these derogatory comments that has a direct relationship to what is happening out in everyday lives," Sanchez said.

Sanchez continued to say that SNL has a history of having sketches that go overboard and having Trump on will just enable him to make derogatory comments. The 26-member Congressional Hispanic Caucus called on NBC to issue an apology for booking the Republican presidential candidate.

NBC has remained quiet about Trump's appearance on Saturday.
