Protests against President-elect Donald Trump turned into a riot in Portland, Oregon on Thursday night, resulting in property damage and arrests.
The initially peaceful protests deteriorated into riots, with property being damaged along the way, CNN reported. While many cities across the U.S. had protests after Trump upset Hillary Clinton on Tuesday night to be elected president, Portland's turned into the most destructive.
CNN's Carol Costello reported that over 200 people had been arrested nationwide, and in Portland, police declared the protests to be a riot. They had to deploy flashbang grenades and non-lethal rubber rounds to break up the crowds. One man was seen attempting to light a tree on fire.
Car windows were smashed in Portland and bus shelters were nearly destroyed by the rioters. Protesters took over streets blocking traffic in Portland and other cities as well.
In Oakland, California, protests also turned violent, with demonstrators carrying molotov cocktails and M-80 firecrackers. Some of the protesters threatened police officers, resulting in 11 arrests.
Protesters in Los Angeles rallied in front of City Hall while chanting "not my president," which has become a common mantra of the anti-Trump demonstrations throughout the country. Crowds of people have been passing Trump properties across the U.S. carrying signs with the "not my president" slogan.
Protests against Trump's election have occurred every night since his victory Tuesday night. More protests are planned for the future.
