Marissa Mayer Defends Tumblr Porn

Stephanopoulos offends Tumblr CEO by calling him a 'hipster'

BY:

Things got a little awkward on "Good Morning America" Tuesday when host George Stephanopoulos referred to Tumblr CEO David Karp as "the original hipster CEO," presumably because Karp started his business after dropping out of high school.

The Tumblr CEO interjected, replying he did not concur with Stephanoplous' hipster characterization:

GEORGE STEPHANOPOULOS: You're the original hipster CEO –

DAVID KARP: I don't know about hipster, I don't know if I appreciate that one.

GEORGE STEPHANOPOULOS: That doesn't work for you?

DAVID KARP: I prefer not.

Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer also sought to downplay the amount of adult NSFW (Not Safe For Work) content on Yahoo's newly acquired blog, telling George Stephanopoulos it accounts for less than 10 percent of the site:

GEORGE STEPHANOPOULOS: Okay, but here — you have had a lot of success since dropping out of high school and you want to continue it now, of course, with Tumblr. One what are the other challenges though Marissa that you'll be facing here is a fair amount of the content on Tumblr is adult content, pornography. Are you worried that is going to turn off advertisers and is it something you're comfortable with?

MARISSA MAYER: It's actually a mistaken assumption. So it actually turns out that Tumblr relative to many of its peer sites actually has relatively low amounts of –

STEPHANOPOULOS: What is it, like 10, 12 percent?

MARISSA MAYER: I think it's actually lower than that-

DAVID KARP: Uh-huh.

MARISSA MAYER: And the idea is we do want the community to have tools, Tumblr has originated the phrase you know, "not safe for work" and we want people to tag whether their content is safe for work. People looking for that kind of thing can find it and those who don't won't find it and also make sure not to find it by accident.

Yahoo's announcement of the $1.1 billion Tumblr deal was met with mixed reaction on Wall Street, with some comparing it to startups Flickr and Geocities that have since languished since being bought by Yahoo.

Mayer was a successful bundler for President Barack Obama's reelection campaign.
