Three actresses from the Broadway hit play "Hamilton" altered the lyrics to "America the Beautiful" at Super Bowl LI on Sunday in an apparent political statement to promote gender equality.

Renee Elise Goldsberry, Phillipa Soo, and Jasmine Cephas Jones, who played the musical's original Schuyler sisters when the show first opened, made an addition to the patriotic song during the Super Bowl's pre-game ceremony, the Washington Times reported.

After the three women sang "And crowned thy good with brotherhood" from the song, they paused before adding "and sisterhood."

"Hamilton" is no stranger to apparent political statements. Vice President Mike Pence attended a showing of the musical in November and was lectured by the cast at the end of the show about the importance of protecting all members of a diverse society.
