The NFL has completed its investigation into the New England Patriots "deflategate" scandal and concluded that the team (in all likelihood) deliberately violated league regulations by deflating its game balls prior to the AFC Championship Game, and that celebrity quarterback Tom Brady was "generally aware" of the wrongdoing. Disciplinary actions may or may not be forthcoming. Either way, the Patriots still went on to win last year’s Super Bowl and kept all its picks in the 2015 NFL Draft.
This is great news for Hillary Clinton.
The NFL investigation, like similar investigations into the Clinton Foundation’s finances, revealed something most Americans know to be true: The Patriots are as addicted to cheating as the Clintons are to money and political corruption. Paranoid individuals who lack the skill to win on an even playing field tend to bend the rules in their favor and, if caught, deny everything. And yet, the investigation failed to find a smoking gun that could remove all doubt.
It’s almost as if Brady has been following the battle-tested Clinton handbook for responding to allegations of wrongdoing. In addition to issuing a vague, defensive rebuttal after the allegations surfaced, Brady subsequently refused to hand over text messages the NFL was seeking as part of its investigation. This, of course, calls to mind Hillary Clinton's refusal to hand over all the emails on her private server on account of her having deleted them. Because LOL who cares? No smoking gun.
Just as Brady and the Patriots will (in all likelihood) suffer no meaningful consequences that will deter them from cheating again and winning more Super Bowls in the future, Hillary Clinton will (in all likelihood) become president in 2016, and we'll all just have to deal with the fact that we live in a country where cheaters win football games and corrupt politicians win elections, and the rich and powerful are treated differently because, let's face it, they're better than us.
