Jonathan V. Last's "Virtues Trilogy"—which began with the deadly virtues before moving onto the Dadly virtues—concludes in epic fashion today with the publication of The Christmas Virtues: A Treasury of Conservative Tales for the Holidays.
As did the previous installments, The Christmas Virtues features essays from many of your favorite conservative writers: P.J. O'Rourke has a chapter on the commercialization of Christmas while Andy Ferguson discusses the increasingly irreligious nature of our Christmas songs. It's not all rightwing rabble rousing, however. The great Matt Labash's chapter is on dealing with family stress during the season and I myself have authored a chapter on Christmas flicks, answering once and for all the age old question about Die Hard's status as a Christmas movie.
Of course, I was on board the moment I saw that Rob Long, mad genius, was mounting a case for Ebenezer Scrooge. (Lord knows I love a good bit of contrarianism.) But he's not wrong! Jonah Goldberg also brings the laughs with his chapter on The War On Christmas™: "It's real, and it's spectacular!" The list of fine contributors goes on and on: Christopher Buckley, Christopher Caldwell, Mollie Hemingway, and even the famous Iowahawk have all written entries for the epic finale. You can check them all out here.
The book would obviously make a great Christmas gift for your crazy drunk uncle, but why wait that long? Get in the spirit of the season, sit down with some of your favorite writers, and prepare yourself for Christmas, in all its glory.
