President Joe Biden is an 81-year-old man who doesn't understand: 1) He's not a U.S. senator anymore, 2) he's not running late to a committee hearing on the 1973 trucker strike, 3) Ted Kennedy isn't hiding under his bed, and 4) almost anything that is happening to him right now.
Nevertheless, Democrats don't have anyone better to run for president, so Biden keeps humiliating himself in public because the future of our democracy is at stake. Sometimes when he veers off script and starts rambling incoherently, Biden will catch himself and reconnect to reality. "Anyway..." he says when this happens, and changes the subject. It's his way of stopping himself from drifting even further back into time to the Suez Crisis of 1956, which almost ruined his 14th birthday.
