Embattled Nevada Democrat Steven Brooks was arrested after he was pulled over in California by local police.
The arresting officers stopped Brooks with a spike strip after witnessing suspicious behavior coming from his SUV and sent a police dog to search the vehicle. Brooks then choked and beat the canine with a wrench.
The dog, Buck, is in stable condition, according to a statement released by the Barstow Police Chief.
Brooks was expelled from the Nevada Assembly hours before his arrest.
