Trump OMB Director Calls Out NY Times for Error During Press Briefing

March 16, 2017

Director of the Office of Management and Budget Mick Mulvaney opened the Thursday White House press briefing by ribbing the New York Times for incorrectly reporting the gender of children.

"Before I take questions, I'm going to do something I don't ordinarily do and I'm sure is kinda new. I'm going to call on the New York Times, because they're in trouble," he said.

Mulvaney then called out two Times reporters by name.

"Matt Flegenheimer And Alan Rappeport are in big trouble," he said. "I'll give you the first question, but you have to deliver this message."

"They said this morning that I'm the father of 17-year-old triplet girls. My 17-year-old daughter wishes that would have happened, but my two 17-year-old sons are really upset," he joked to laughter. "So if you could clarify that, that would be great."

Sure enough, a Times story Thursday reported that Mulvaney is "a father of triplet daughters." It has not yet been corrected as of 4 PM on Thursday.

"We're not great at math obviously at the New York Times," White House correspondent Mark Lander joked apologetically.

"The math is right, it's actually the gender that was wrong," Mulvaney responded.
