CNN host Jake Tapper managed to conduct an entire interview with billionaire Democrat Tom Steyer about his opposition to President-elect Donald Trump without mentioning the large sums of money Steyer is spending to oppose him.
Steyer was billed only as "a fierce critic of Donald Trump" in the Wednesday interview, and then given four minutes of free airtime to rehash his attacks on Oklahoma attorney general Scott Pruitt, Trump's pick to lead the Environmental Protection Agency.
At no point in the segment did Tapper mention that Steyer's personal Super PAC, NextGen Climate Action, is currently running television ads attacking Pruitt and Exxon Mobil CEO Rex Tillerson, Trump's nominee for secretary of state.
Steyer's role as a funder of anti-Trump efforts did not come up at all.
On Thursday morning, Tapper took to twitter to urge introspection by members of the political press in light of criticism from some conservatives.
"If journalists are ever going to repair the chasm of trust that exists with the public we need to pay attention to some of the reasons this chasm exists," he wrote. "Some of it is indeed our doing and our responsibility to try to fix."
