Democratic Sen. Heidi Heitkamp (N.D.) on Thursday slammed Hillary Clinton’s recent remark at a fundraiser that half of Donald Trump’s supporters are in a "basket of deplorables."
Heitkamp was asked about Clinton’s comment during a radio interview on WZFG 1100 AM in North Dakota, Buzzfeed reported Friday. The senator separated herself from Clinton’s "deplorables"comment and called it "ill-advised."
"Yes, I do," Heitkamp said. "I think it was a wrong thing to say. I think that it ignores the very true concerns that we have about needing change in this country. I think that it was ill-advised."
"I think [Clinton] said it was ill-advised," Heitkamp said. "I think she walked it back, and I think that it was unfortunate that she said it. I’m glad that she’s denounced that statement, and I do not agree with her."
Although North Dakota supported Sen. Bernie Sanders (I., Vt.) in the Democratic primary, Heitkamp endorsed Clinton before the Democratic National Convention, drawing criticism from Democrats in North Dakota.
