Hillary Clinton said that her husband Bill is very serious about "defending and protecting" her in response to the former president’s tense exchange with Black Lives Matter protesters at a rally for Hillary on Thursday.
"He does take defending and protecting me very seriously, and I appreciate that," Clinton said Sunday and defended her husband's legacy, calling it "great."
At a campaign event Thursday in Philadelphia, Bill Clinton had a heated exchange with Black Lives Matters protesters who were condemning Hillary Clinton's use of the term "super predators" to describe young gang members in 1996.
"I don’t know how you would characterize the gang leaders who got 13-year-old kids hopped up on crack and sent them out on the street to murder other African-American children," the former president said.
Clinton stood by his controversial 1994 crime bill, which he claimed led to a "25-year low in crime" and "a 33-year low in the murder rate."
"You are defending the people who kill the people whose lives you say matter. Tell the truth!" Clinton said to the protesters.
Despite Hillary’s characterization of Bill as her protector and defender, the former president has a past of philandering and womanizing. In 1998, Clinton was caught in an affair with 22-year-old White House intern Monica Lewinsky. He has also been accused of having a 12-year affair with Gennifer Flowers. Numerous women have also accused him of sexual harassment and assault.
Still, Hillary touts a strong feminist platform on the campaign trail, and, with her husband by her side, has accused critics of sexism. Most recently, Bill attacked rival Bernie Sanders as a "subconscious" sexist after Sanders told Clinton, "Excuse me, I'm talking."
