The taxpayers of Windham, N.H. may foot the bill for a recent visit by Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, according to a local news report on Tuesday.
"The Windham Board of Selectman voted 4-1 last night to have taxpayers pick up the tab for a recent visit by Hillary Clinton," WMUR anchor Sean McDonald said.
Estimates of the cost to be absorbed by the city differ. According to the Eagle-Tribune, the cost of Clinton’s visit was between $800 and $1,000 for a special police and fire detail. According to a dissenting member of the board of selectman, the bill was between $1,800 and $3,000.
The Clinton campaign, for its part, says it received a bill for the services and wants to pay up.
"We have received an invoice and look forward working with the town of Windham to pay all appropriate costs associated with the event, as we do with local officials across New Hampshire," Clinton spokeswoman Julie McClain told the Eagle-Tribune.
The Board of Selectman’s 4-1 vote indicates Clinton might be able to walk the check, although future politicians will be treated differently. The board voted 3-2 that future visits would be paid for by politicians’ campaigns.
