Sen. Mary Landrieu repeated Politifact’s 2011 Lie of the Year during the Louisiana Senate debate on Tuesday.
Landrieu said her opponent, Republican Congressman Bill Cassidy, voted with House Republicans to end Medicare, a claim Politifact named its Lie of the Year in 2011.
Landrieu was referring to Cassidy’s vote on the federal budget, which was constructed to steadily reduce the federal deficit. Proposed by Rep. Paul Ryan (R., Wis.), the plan kept Medicare for Americans 55 and older, but altered the program for younger Americans but privatizing it and offering subsidies.
But to Landrieu, that meant ending the entire program.
"I support the Medicare program as we know it," Landrieu said during the debate. "Congressman Cassidy voted to end Medicare as we know it."
Cassidy leads Landrieu by five points.
