State Department Spokeswoman Jen Psaki said her department had no "long-term plan" for Sunni tribes under Hillary Clinton’s leadership.
Fox News’ Bill Hemmer asked why the State Department did not monitored the growing threat of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL or ISIS) over the past several years.
"There are are other debates that say you keep an American force behind, you keep an eye on ISIS and you help the Iraqis keep an eye on them and they would not exist in the form that they exist today," Hemmer said. "Has Iraq now become a teachable moment for this administration?"
Psaki skirted the question, responding that the U.S. is now approaching the chaos in Iraq "differently" than it has was when Clinton was secretary of state.
"A couple of years ago when we worked with Sunni tribes we didn’t have a long-term plan for them to be engaged in what they Iraqi security forces were doing," she said.
Psaki also noted the U.S. is working to establish a national guard in Iraq.
