Endangered Sen. Mary Landrieu's (D., La.) run for a fourth term in the Senate is caught in a tailspin after reports she used taxpayer funds to charter private planes to attend campaign events and fundraisers, which is a violation of federal law.
"It’s a mistake and I’m very sorry. It’s bookkeeping error," said Landrieu when asked by KTBS in Shreveport, La. The senator said she is commissioning an outside council to review nearly twenty years of travel records for any spending violations and will refund taxpayers fully for all misused money.
Meanwhile, Landrieu’s Republican opponent, Rep. Bill Cassidy, has nudged by the incumbent in campaign cash on hand, having raised $5.6 million to Landrieu’s $5.5 million.
