2025 Man of the Year: Katie Porter’s Ex-Husband

Behind every man there’s a great woman. Or so the saying goes. But if you ask Matthew Hoffman, that woman might be standing behind you with a molten pot of potatoes, and the only thing great about her is the size of her temper. And, well, her size. Hoffman claims that in 2006 his then-wife yelled at him, "Can’t you read the fucking directions?" before dumping the steaming spuds on his head, burning his scalp. Hoffman says he suffered a litany of abuse for years, both physical and verbal in nature, before she divorced him in 2013. This woman became a Democratic member of Congress from California, ran a failed Senate campaign, and is now looking to replace Gov. Gavin Newsom (D., Calif.). Fat chance: The woman is Katie Porter.

By now you may be familiar with Ms. Porter’s school of manners: In an October interview with CBS News, a reporter lobbed a softball question at her, asking how she planned on winning over Trump voters, who comprise 40 percent of the state’s electorate. "How would I need them in order to win, ma’am?" Porter scoffed. Following a back-and-forth with CBS, Porter called the interview "unnecessarily argumentative" and threatened to walk out.

Or perhaps you recall the interview Porter did with then-energy secretary Jennifer Granholm, in which the congresswoman chews out one of her staffers for appearing in the background. "Get out of my fucking shot," she says, in a video obtained by Politico.

None of this comes as a surprise to Hoffman, who recently told the New York Post that his ex is a "master manipulator" and "it’s about time" the rest of us caught on. The tales of Hoffman include Porter smashing a coffee pot because the house was supposedly not clean and refusing to allow him to have a cell phone because "you’re too fucking dumb to operate it."

Perhaps if Hoffman had his own political aspirations, he would stand by his woman and trade the Porter name for a state cabinet position. Instead, he's blazing his own trail.

For being ahead of the curve, for warning Californians before it’s too late, and for being Tina to Katie’s Ike Turner, Matthew Hoffman, you are a Washington Free Beacon Man of the Year.
