President Joe Biden falsely claimed this week that he "used to teach political theory" at the University of Pennsylvania, the latest example of the president lying about his past.
"I taught at the University of Pennsylvania for four years," Biden said in a Thursday speech at Prince George's Community College, "and I used to teach political theory."
While the Ivy League university did give Biden an honorary professorship after he left the vice presidency, he did few, if any, tasks associated with being a professor, multiple fact-checkers have found.
For example, Biden never taught a single semester-long class, conducted independent research, or handled administrative responsibilities, the left-wing site PolitiFact found after Biden last year made the claim.
Biden's job "involved no regular classes and around a dozen public appearances on campus, mostly in big, ticketed events," the Philadelphia Inquirer reported in 2019. He received more than $900,000 for holding the position between 2017 and 2019.
This is far the first instance of Biden lying about his past. He lied on Monday about visiting Ground Zero on the day after 9/11. In fact, he visited the site nine days after the terrorist attacks.
The president has also falsely claimed that he marched during the Civil Rights Movement, that he was arrested while protesting apartheid in South Africa, and that his son Beau died in Iraq.
Biden, a Catholic of Irish descent, this week told a group of rabbis that he was "raised in the synagogues of my state." He has also said he was raised in black, Puerto Rican, and Polish communities.
"This president has a pattern at this point of either inventing or embellishing stories about his own past," CNN fact-checker Daniel Dale said Tuesday.
