DWS' Anti-Israel Ally

July 2, 2012

A South Florida representative to the Democratic National Committee is facing scrutiny after engaging in an anti-Israel meltdown throughout a series of leaked emails reported on by BizPacReview.

The official in question is Evelyn Garcia, a Palm Beach County representative to the DNC and ally of its chair, Florida Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz. Garcia additionally serves as a Democratic Executive Committee member and is running to become a member of the Florida State House.

Garcia’s anti-Israel tirade was sparked by her allies at Code Pink, a left-wing anti-war group that regularly decries the power of the so-called "pro-Israel lobby," which it accuses of exerting undue control of the U.S. foreign policy establishment.

The release of the e-mails adds to a growing headache for Democrats and the Obama campaign over the issue of Israel in in South Florida, a heavily Jewish area that has become wary of the president. Democrats and Republicans alike have accused Wasserman Schultz of orchestrating a pro-Obama campaign in several synagogues, which violates IRS rules for nonprofits.

Garcia forwarded an anti-Israel missive from Code Pink to an undisclosed number of Democratic supporters, BizPacReview reports. The e-mail decried the power of the "pro-occupation lobby" and smeared the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, the nation’s largest pro-Israel group.

After an angry recipient of the e-mail blast expressed, Garcia experienced an anti-Israel meltdown, accusing the Jewish state of "apartheid" and denouncing "the illegal occupation of Palestine," according to the e-mails, which BizPackReview published.

"The illegal … occupation must end," Garcia writes. "You want to blame that on Obama too? ... He’s not the one on thin ice. Thin ice is what the perpetrators are on. Slavery was ended. Apartheid was ended, and so this occupation must also end. Code Pink is promoting PEACE and FREEDOM. Get on board."

Garcia then goes on to express her "strong objection to continued US MILITARY support for the Israeli occupation."

She then explains how the U.S.-Israel relationship promotes "crimes against humanity."

"By supporting Israeli occupation with U.S. foreign military aid," Garcia writes, "we are all complicit and guilty of their crimes against humanity."

Garcia then pledges to "boycott [and] divest" from Israel, as well as support the unilateral establishment of the State of Palestine at the United Nations, a move that most observers believe would detonate the peace process with Israel.

"The continued Israeli occupation of Palestine is ugly, on moral, ethical, religious, and legal grounds, and no amount of marketing will cover up this ugliness," Garcia writes. "What possible justification you have for continuing this unholy occupation is beyond my understanding."

"Palestinians," she adds, "had nothing to do with the Holocaust and it’s about time this guilt trip was taken off their backs."

Garcia then repeats her call for an end to the U.S.-Israel military alliance.

"I deeply resent U.S. taxpayer funds being used to continue Israeli aggression," she writes.

Garcia has been endorsed in her candidacy by the Florida Education Association, as well as by the Florida brach of the AFL-CIO labor lobby.

Garcia did not respond to multiple requests for comment.
