Employee unions and environmentalists have created a veterans front group that is attacking the Republican in Montana’s U.S. Senate race, according to Montana Watchdog.
The group known as VoteVets.org has spent $100,000 on an ad falsely claiming that Republican nominee Rep. Denny Rehberg opposed funding for prosthetics for wounded veterans. The group, it turns out, is funded by a slew of liberal special interests that have nothing to do with the military.
Documents reviewed by Montana Watchdog show that VoteVets.org is funded by Patriot Majority, itself a front for the 2.1-million-member Service Employees International Union. SEIU’s $750,000 in contributions to VoteVets.org this election cycle make it one of the group’s top donors.
Other contributors included the environmental group Sierra Club (which gave the veterans front group $670,000) and the United Steelworkers, a 1.2 million-member union ($50,000).
Veterans could be a decisive voting bloc in November. U.S. Census Bureau data shows more than 100,000 Montanans, about 10 percent of the state’s population, are military veterans. The national average is about 7 percent.
Rehberg is running neck-in-neck with Democratic incumbent Jon Tester.
