Washington Free Beacon founding editor Matthew Continetti said Thursday that despite a "slickly produced" presentation, the impeachment case made by the Democrats is unlikely to sway Republican senators.
"The question is, behind all this, does the conduct that President Trump initiated rise to the level of an impeachable offense?" Continetti said during an appearance on Fox News's Special Report. "Even though this story may be slickly produced and well told, at the end of the day I don't think it's going to convince any Republicans."
Continetti also pointed out that President Trump's defense team has yet to present their case against removing Trump from office.
"Part of the reason is right now we are in the part of the trial where the platform is entirely given to the prosecution," Continetti said. "That will change over the weekend. I think once the defense has an opportunity to present its side of the story and its case, I think Republicans will feel the wind in their sails."
This week marked the start of the Senate trial that will determine whether or not President Trump will be removed from office. The House impeachment managers have 24 hours over three days to present their case for removal before the president's own team of litigators will be able to respond. A vote could occur on Wednesday, Jan. 29th at the earliest.
