Sen. Doug Jones (D., Ala.), who has called pro-life laws passed in his own state "shameful" and "callous," said he has reflected "Alabama values" during his time in the Senate.
"They look at what we've done in the Senate in the last two years. They're going to see that we've worked for people in Alabama," Jones told WIAT in Birmingham, Ala. "We've actually reflected Alabama values."
Polling conducted for Planned Parenthood affiliates in 2018 found that 60 percent of Alabamians expressed support for outlawing abortion in all cases or with exceptions for the health of the mother, rape, and incest. A 2014 Pew Research Center poll found that 58 percent of Alabamians believe abortion should be illegal in all or most cases.
Although a majority of Alabamians support outlawing abortion in most cases, Jones ripped a pro-life law passed in his state in May as "irresponsible."
"This bill, frankly, is shameful. It is callous," he told reporters at the time. "We need to call this bill what it is...It is the most extreme abortion ban in the country."
He described himself as "deeply disappointed" with the legislation, which was hailed by pro-life advocates as a "landmark victory."
He has received a 75 percent score from Planned Parenthood for his voting on abortion issues, meaning he votes with the organization's policies a significant majority of the time.
After his upset victory in a 2017 special election, Jones faces an uphill climb to reelection in 2020. He is a Democrat representing a state President Donald Trump won by almost 30 percentage points in 2016.
Former attorney general Jeff Sessions announced his entry into the Alabama Senate primary last month, joining a crowded field of Republicans seeking to challenge Jones in 2020.
