Ilhan Omar Denounces Trump's 'Racist and Sinful Big Wall'

January 16, 2019

Rep. Ilhan Omar (D., Minn.) denounced President Donald Trump's "quest for a racist and sinful big wall" between the U.S. and Mexico during a speech on the House floor on Wednesday.

"I join the similar calls made by my colleagues today, and I demand that the president end his temper tantrums and quest for a racist and sinful big wall," Omar said. "And I demand that he work with us to reopen the government before any more damage is done. Enough is enough. The American people deserve better."

Omar has repeatedly criticized Trump's desire to secure funding for a wall along the border with Mexico. In one tweet, she said "there is no longer the political will for your hateful and ineffective wall in Congress."

In other tweets, Omar said "a wall isn't the answer" and claimed it is "xenophobic."

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D., Calif.) has been adamant that the Democrats will not approve funds for Trump's wall.

"No, no. Nothing for the wall," Pelosi said in response to a question from NBC's Savannah Guthrie about whether Democrats would give some money for the wall.

"We can go through this all back and forth—no," Pelosi added. "How many more times can we say no? Nothing for the wall."

Pelosi has also called the border wall "immoral, ineffective, and expensive."

Other Democrats have disagreed. On Sunday, Sen. Chris Coons (D., Del.) said he disagreed with the idea that a border wall is "immoral."

"I personally don't think that a border wall is in and of itself immoral," Coons said, although he suggested Pelosi was referring to "some of the immoral immigration policies of the Trump administration" when she made her comments about the wall.

Last month, Omar claimed "this president, this administration, every day has gone a little bit closer to being impeached."
