Kavanaugh in New Judicial Crisis Network Ad: 'I Will Not Be Intimidated Into Withdrawing From This Process'

September 28, 2018

The Judicial Crisis Network released an advertisement on Thursday in support of Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, who calls the allegations made against him and the handling of them by Senate Democrats a "coordinated and well funded effort to destroy my good name."

The ad, titled "Fighting Back" features Kavanaugh's testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Thursday.

Kavanaugh, who was nominated to fill the Supreme Court seat vacated by retired Justice Anthony Kennedy, has been accused of past sexual misconduct by three women, on the record. He has denied all accusations. One of the women, Dr. Christine Blasey Ford, testified along with Kavanaugh before the committee.

The allegations made by Ford were known to Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D., Calif.) in July but she did not come forward with them to Kavanaugh or share them with her Republican colleagues until September. President Donald Trump has criticized the delay, calling it "completely political."

Kavanaugh himself previously referred to the allegations as "last minute smear campaigns."

In his testimony on Thursday, Kavanaugh echoed those sentiments and restated his commitment to his nomination.

"The vile threats of violence against my family will not drive me out," he said.  "You'll never get me to quit, never."

Referencing calls by Senate Democrats to delay his confirmation even before the allegations came to light, Kavanaugh said, "I will not be intimidated into withdrawing from this process. You've tried hard. You've given it your all. No one would question your effort."

Before the allegations of sexual misconduct were made, Senate Democrats, including Feinstein, Sen. Cory Booker (D., N.J.), and Sen. Kamala Harris (D., Calif.), called for the hearing to be delayed to allow for the release of additional documents related to his time serving in the George W. Bush White House. Committee chairman Chuck Grassley (R., Iowa) declined those requests and moved forward with the hearing. However, following the allegations, Grassley reopened the hearing this week to allow Kavanaugh's accusers the opportunity to speak.

Grassley has scheduled a committee vote on Kavanaugh for Friday morning.

"Tell Your Senator: Confirm Kavanaugh, " the advertisement ends.

The Judicial Crisis Network's Chief Counsel and Policy Director Carrie Severino released a statement following the testimony on Thursday saying senators had a choice before them: vote for Kavanuagh or endorse a smear campaign.

"We started the day with an allegation that had no corroboration; every witness she placed at the scene refuted her story," Severino said. "And now, after her testimony, her story is even more muddled. The circumstances Dr. Ford has described sound awful. And anyone who sympathizes with her should be outraged that the Democrats have politicized this process to the irreparable detriment of both Dr. Ford and Judge Kavanaugh. Senators have a choice: endorse a smear campaign or support Judge Kavanaugh."
