Sen. Pat Toomey (R., Pa.) has “deep concerns” about former Sen. Chuck Hagel, considered a frontrunner for the position of secretary of defense, the Pennsylvania Senator said in a statement released Thursday to the Washington Free Beacon.

“I have deep concerns about Sen. Hagel’s attitude toward Israel and his approach toward dealing with Iran,” Toomey said in the statement. “If President Obama nominates Sen. Hagel for secretary of defense, I intend to seek explanations regarding his opposition to sanctions, his support for negotiating with Hamas, and his view on America’s ongoing relationship with Israel.”

In 2010, Toomey defeated former Rep. Joe Sestak (D., Pa.), an Israel critic who had been endorsed by Hagel.

Toomey is not alone in voicing his concern about Hagel: Sen. Kelly Ayotte (R., N.H.) also told Fox News Thursday she has “serious concerns” about Hagel’s prospective nomination.
