February 23, 2017

The New York Times is set to air its first advertisement on Sunday that has a theme of uncovering the truth, featuring a white screen with different phrases that start with "the truth is."

This will run during the Academy Awards and is entitled "The Truth."

The ad "appears to target [President Donald] Trump['s] administration," The Hill reported on Thursday.

Each line that starts with "the truth is" is followed by "conflicting statements" that have been heavily discussed in the media and political realms.

The lines of the commercial are as follows:

  • The truth is our nation is more divided than ever.
  • The truth is alternative facts are lies.
  • The truth is the media is dishonest.
  • The truth is a woman should dress like a woman.
  • The truth is women's rights are human rights.
  • The truth is we have to protect our borders.
  • The truth is his refugee policy is a backdoor Muslim ban.
  • The truth is we need a full investigation into Russian ties.
  • The truth is leaking classified information is the real scandal.
  • The truth is climate change is a hoax.
  • The truth is the Supreme Court seat was stolen.

After the lines are presented the commercial speeds up, and many more sentences flash before the viewers' eyes.

While the statements are displayed on the screen, excerpts of people talking can be heard in the background.

The commercial ends with "the truth is hard," turning into "the truth is hard to find," then into "the truth is hard to know."

The sentence then molds into "the truth is more important now than ever," and the ad ends with the logo of the Times on a white screen.
