Sanders: I Would Have Preferred Clinton Select Elizabeth Warren As Her Running Mate

July 24, 2016

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I., Vt.) said Sunday on Meet The Press that he would have preferred Hillary Clinton select left-wing Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D., Mass.) as her running mate instead of the more centrist Sen. Tim Kaine (D., Va.).

Clinton disappointed many progressives in the party when she tapped Kaine as her vice-presidential pick, citing disagreements with him on issues like Wall Street and trade agreements, in addition to having discomfort with his more socially conservative positions held in the past.

Sanders, who expressed anger Sunday with the Democratic National Committee after leaked emails revealed party bias and outright conspiring against his presidential campaign, told host Chuck Todd he would have preferred the more liberal Warren.

"I know Tim Kaine called you after he was picked. Do you consider Tim Kaine a progressive, and are you happy with this pick?" Todd asked.

"Look, the pick is Secretary Clinton's. I've known Tim Kaine for a number of years," Sanders said. "We served in the Senate together, obviously. Tim is a very, very smart guy. He's a very nice guy. His political views are not my political views. He is more conservative than I am. Would I have preferred to see somebody like an Elizabeth Warren selected by Secretary Clinton? Yes, I would have."

Sanders' rhetoric showed the so-called unity in the Democratic Party after he gave Clinton his half-hearted endorsement may just be a facade. Sanders called on DNC chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D., Fla.) to resign from her post on Sunday.
