Hillary Clinton’s name was booed loudly, presumably by supporters of Sen. Bernie Sanders (I., Vt.), during Monday’s invocation at the Democratic National Convention, and his fans chanted "Bernie!"
Rev. Cynthia Hale’s remarks included proclaiming that the party celebrates diversity before she mentioned the name of the nominee.
"We have an opportunity, oh God, to give undeniable evidence of our commitment to justice and equality, by nominating Hillary Rodham Clinton as our candidate," Hale said.
Before she could continue, she was interrupted by loud cheering but also unmistakable booing.
"Hallelujah," Hale said. "As our candidate for the highest office in the land. God, you have given us wisdom. Now give us courage for the facing of this hour."
As she spoke, chants of "Bernie! Bernie!" filled the arena in Philadelphia.
"Unite us, oh God, in one party. It is in your mighty name that we pray. Amen," she said.
Sanders supporters also booed when the senator himself said it was important to elect her and defeat Donald Trump during remarks earlier on Monday. With the leak of Democratic National Committee emails revealing party higher-ups worked against Sanders’ campaign, there is strong anti-Clinton sentiment by the left-wing populist’s supporters at this week’s convention.
