Pelosi: 'Sessions Should Resign as Attorney General'

June 9, 2017

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D., Calif.) on Friday called for Attorney General Jeff Sessions to resign, echoing her earlier call for his resignation back in March.

"We now have learned that Jeff Sessions, the attorney general, now has had a third meeting with Russians," MSNBC host Joe Scarborough said to Pelosi. "That was not revealed, reportedly coming from a private session yesterday. Why is it that they lie about all of their meetings with Russians?"

Scarborough was referring to a CNN report that said former FBI Director James Comey told senators in a closed hearing Thursday that Sessions "may have had a third interaction with Russia's ambassador to the U.S."

Pelosi responded by calling for an "outside independent commission" to investigate the matter, adding that this issue goes beyond politics and is about "a Russian assault" on American democracy.

"I can't, as Sen. [Susan] Collins said, confirm or deny the issue of the third meeting, but I did say on March 2 that Sessions should resign as attorney general," Pelosi said on "Morning Joe."

The House's top Democrat was referring to her statement on March 2 calling for Sessions to resign after it was revealed that he met twice with the Russian ambassador last year.

"The attorney general must resign," Pelosi said at the time. "Sessions is not fit to serve as the top law enforcement officer of our country."
