Obama: Republicans Must 'Pay a Price' for Gridlock

November 7, 2016

President Obama did not hold back his discontent for Republican legislators while campaigning for Hillary Clinton in Philadelphia on Monday evening, saying they need to "pay a price."

While imploring the crowd to vote for down-ballot Democrats, Obama expressed his frustrations with congressional Republicans, who he suggested have been the sole cause of gridlock in Washington.

"You cannot just put Hillary with Republicans in Congress, who are already promising more unprecedented dysfunction in Washington," Obama said.

Painting a bleak picture of the next four years, Obama suggested that Republicans would bring about more shutdowns and obstructions if they remained in the majority with Clinton as president.

"It is a stated Republican strategy since I took office," Obama said, insinuating that Republican lawmakers want gridlock in Washington. "The only way to break it is to make those who engage in it pay a price by electing more Democrats tomorrow."

Obama then pleaded with the audience to defeat Sen. Pat Toomey (R., Pa.) because he had contributed to the gridlock in Washington and would continue to do so if reelected.

The rally in Philadelphia included performances from Jon Bon Jovi and Bruce Springsteen, as well as speeches from Bill and Chelsea Clinton, Michelle Obama, and Hillary Clinton.
