Democratic Rep. Jerry Nadler (N.Y.) on Tuesday joined Politico's Edward-Isaac Dovere for his "Off Message" podcast, where the lawmaker pushed a story about President Donald Trump from the 1991 anti-Trump book Trumped! after saying he did not know whether the anecdote was true.
"Is Donald Trump a racist? Is he an anti-Semite?" Dovere asked.
"He has certainly showed racism over the years," Nadler said after a long pause. "I don't know about anti-Semitism, but he certainly—he has certain prejudices."
Nadler then told a story about Trump from over two decades earlier after admitting he had no idea whether it was true.
"The story was told that many years ago, [Trump] walked into the backroom of one of his casinos and saw some black accountants figuring his ledgers and said, 'I don't want black people counting my money, I want short fat guys with yarmulkes.'"
"I don't know whether that's true," Nadler added. "I shouldn't really—I don't know whether that's true, but it's told about him."
The Washington Post said the story is a secondhand quote and should be viewed with "skepticism."
