MSNBC Stumped Trying to Figure Out Any Rationale Hillary Has to Run for President

November 14, 2014

The hosts of MSNBC’s Morning Joe stumped themselves Friday morning trying to explain why Hillary Clinton should run for president.

Their conclusion? There is no rational explanation.

"At this moment, beyond ‘it’s her turn, it’s her time,’ there’s not a clear articulated rationale for the candidacy as of yet," Bloomberg’s John Heilemann said.

Heilemann argued that there is a more obvious explanation for Elizabeth Warren to seek the Democratic nomination than Clinton.

"Ask yourself the question, right now if Elizabeth Warren decided tomorrow she was going run for president, nobody would have any lack of clarity why she was running. You could explain that in two sentences," Heilemann said. "Right now Hillary Clinton you can't explain in two sentences beyond the fact that she’s the dominant front-runner."

Joe Scarborough compared Clinton to the late Sen. Ted Kennedy, who was unable to answer why he was running for president in 1979.

"He could not answer that simple question, and bluntly his presidential campaign never really took off and never recovered. Hillary Clinton right now couldn't answer that question," Scarborough said. "If somebody got a microphone in her face and asked her ‘why do you want to run for president?’ it might be the same thing. She couldn't even promote a book this summer without falling over herself."

Huffington Post political reporter Sam Stein said Clinton’s presumptive campaign will be plagued by her service in the wildly unpopular Obama administration.

"As much as it's rationale, part of the problem is Obama. She was part of his administration," Stein said. "He's been in office for years or will have been. Clearly voters have soured on the guy."

Former talk show host Donny Deutsch had a more simple explanation.

"Her biggest problem...people are tired of looking at her," Deutsch said. "They're just tired of it. People are just ready to change the channel."
