Maddow Calls Nevada Democratic Convention 'Ugly, Ugly Stuff'

May 17, 2016

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I., Vt.) supporters broke up the Nevada's Democratic Party convention this past Saturday. Sanders supporters booed Hillary Clinton supporter Sen. Barbara Boxer (D., CA.) so loudly that she was forced to cut her speech short.

"Ugly, ugly stuff coming out of the Democratic Party in Nevada," Rachel Maddow said Monday night on MSNBC. "And all of it over essentially a handful of delegates in a state that one of the candidates clearly won in the state-wide caucus."

Maddow said that there is a lot of focus on the discourse in the Republican Party and that the Democrats also need to be concerned.

Clinton won the caucus back in February and was leading Sanders by three delegates. The convention was meant to decide where the remaining twelve delegates would be assigned.

Sanders supporters interrupted the convention with boos, loud chants, and reports of thrown chairs. The main complaint from Sanders supporters was over what they call a rigged system. Sanders supporters also believed that they would outnumber Clinton supporters but Sanders supporters missed the registration deadline to be considered a Democrat and some just did not show up.

"What kind of democracy is this?" one supporter shouted.

The situation got so out of hand that law enforcement was called in and the convention was shut down early.

The New York Times reported that Roberta Lange, chairwoman of the Nevada Democratic Party, received death threats and threats against her family.

"Cheating is not winning" was written in chalk on the outside of the Nevada Democratic Party headquarters. The headquarters was closed on Monday over concerns over security.
