Washington Free Beacon contributing editor Daniel Halper said Sunday that President Trump making a political choice for FBI Director could further exacerbate the politically fraught situation surrounding James Comey's firing.
At least eight candidates have been interviewed for the position, according to reports, among them Sen. John Cornyn (R., Texas). Halper said a choice like him could further complicate matters, however.
The topic dominated discussion during the panel segment of Sunday night's "Special Report" on Fox News.
"The downside, I think, to having somebody so political ... is it becomes even more political," Halper said. "For Democrats at this point, it's not about Comey as much as it is about Trump, and it's all about attacking Trump and using every instrument at their disposal."
He added that returning the position of FBI Director to a competent, non-household name could tamp down the furor surrounding Comey's dismissal.
