Giuliani Won't Respond to Clinton's 'Basket of Deplorables' Comment, Doesn't Do Politics on 9/11

September 11, 2016

Former New York mayor Rudy Giuliani (R.) said Sunday he wouldn't respond to Hillary Clinton's remarks that half of Donald Trump's supporters were bigots in a "basket of deplorables," saying he didn't do politics on the anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks.

Clinton made the comments Friday at an LGBT fundraiser in New York City, drawing sharp criticism from the Trump campaign that it was insulting and offensive.

"To just be grossly generalistic, you can put half of Trump supporters into what I call the basket of deplorables," Clinton said. "Right? Racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamaphobic, you name it."

She expressed regret for the comments later in the weekend, and ABC host George Stephanopoulos asked Giulani for his response.

"Today, I'm not going to respond to that," Giuliani said. "I've never done politics on September 11, even when I was running for president. I actually think the nicest thing and the best thing to say about this campaign is I know Hillary Clinton. I know Donald Trump much better. Neither one of them is a racist, and for either one to say that means they're getting a little too excited in their campaigning. They're both good people."

Giuliani was the New York City mayor during on Sept. 11, 2001, when al Qaeda terrorists hijacked airplanes and flew two of them into the World Trade Center towers, causing both to collapse. Another plane was flown into the Pentagon in Washington, and another crashed in Pennsylvania before reaching its intended target, thanks to the heroic efforts of the passengers.
