More than a dozen Democratic members of the Electoral College have joined calls for an intelligence briefing on Russian meddling in the 2016 election before casting their votes for president next week.

The nineteen electors, including speaker of the New York City Council Melissa Mark-Viverito and Syracuse Mayor Stephanie Miner, have joined the initial ten electoral members who sent an open letter to Director of National Intelligence James Clapper on Monday demanding security clearances, Politico reported.

The 29 total electors, including one Republican, are hoping to receive information on foreign interference in the presidential race ahead of their Dec. 19 meeting, where they will formally cast their votes for the next president.

"Separate from Mr. Trump's own denials of Russian involvement in the election, the confirmed communication between Trump's aides and those associated with the Russian election interference activity raise serious concerns that must be addressed before we cast our votes," the electors wrote to Clapper.

The daughter of House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi was among the letter's signatories.

Top Hillary Clinton adviser John Podesta said on Monday the campaign was backing the effort.

"The bipartisan electors' letter raises very grave issues involving our national security," he said in a statement. "Electors have a solemn responsibility under the Constitution and we support their efforts to have their questions addressed."
