The Indiana Democratic Party acknowledged Monday that it referred approximately 2,000 voters to the wrong polling locations via text messages.

The text messages prompted officials in Marion County to begin investigating the matter.

The Indiana Democratic Party says that it sent more than 400,000 text messages to likely Democratic voters, but at least one Republican city-county councilman received one with the incorrect polling information, the Indy Star reported.

The party said the mistake was due to a software error. The communications director for the Indiana Democratic Party, Drew Anderson, emailed a statement to the Indy Star.

"The Indiana Democratic Party experienced a data-match error in our get-out-the-vote text message program to Democratic voters," Anderson said. "We are correcting the error now with a new message directing the voters impacted to www.indianavoters.com so that they are able to confirm their polling location."

Indiana State Police are also investigating reports of voter fraud. The group under investigation has been registering Democrats in the state, CNN reported.

Indiana is the home of Donald Trump's running mate, Gov. Mike Pence.
