De Blasio Sarcastically Calls His Ethics Scandal Bigger Than Watergate

August 1, 2016

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio laughed off his ongoing ethics scandal during an interview, sarcastically claiming the investigation into his campaign finance operations is bigger than Watergate.

During an interview at the DNC, the host read an excerpt from an article on de Blasio’s re-zoning of a nursing home into luxury condos.

"City hall whitewash probe reveals de Blasio’s staff deliberately covered up details," the host read, asking for de Blasio’s response to the accusation.

"This is probably bigger than Watergate," Deblasio said sarcastically. "I just wanted you to know that."

The New York City mayor has been the subject of five investigations by six different government agencies, primarily focusing on violations concerning his campaign fundraising.

De Blasio had a rough week during the Democratic National Convention that ended in a scathing exposé in the Wall Street Journal published on Sunday. The article features de Blasio’s current and former staffers making comments saying, "Anyone can incur his wrath," and that he "sometimes speaks slowly, like one would to a toddler," to describe the mayor.
