CNN: 'Trust Issue' Remains for Clinton With Democrats

February 7, 2016

Hillary Clinton endured a "very tough" town hall Saturday with college students in New Hampshire that got into her trustworthiness as a candidate, and CNN's Inside Politics panel noted that a "trust issue" remains for her with Democratic voters.

CNN reporter Maeve Reston noted there was even a brief "tussle" to take away a microphone from one young voter who asked about Clinton's private email server and the federal investigation into Clinton's mishandling of classified information.

"A very, very tough event for her," Reston said. "There were a whole series of questions that got at this trust issue for her. It really is lingering among Democrats as much as everyone likes to say that the email issue doesn't matter to Democrats. It really does to some of them that have doubts."

Fellow correspondent Jeff Zeleny said Clinton had gone from being contrite about the emails to being defiant.

"This is still going to go on," Zeleny said. "It's not still not as big of an issue in the Democratic primary, but it will linger, linger, linger in the general election if she gets there."

The Atlantic's Molly Ball says she hears constantly from Clinton supporters that their friends, especially female ones, still can't fully trust Clinton.

"Even some of Hillary's supporters, what I hear is, 'I don't think this is an issue but I have so many friends, especially female friends, who don't trust her, and I'm worried about that in a general election or even in the primary,'" Ball said.
