Brian Williams Blames the 'American People' for Not Demanding That Trump Release His Tax Returns

March 2, 2017

Brian Williams, while guest-hosting MSNBC's "Last Word" on Wednesday, blamed the American people for not demanding that President Donald Trump release his tax returns.

His guest, David Cay Johnston said that Congress has the power to demand the returns under a law from the 1920s, and listed the importance of Trump's tax returns.

"We would know where Trump is getting money, where he has borrowed money, who he has paid interest to, who his partners are, who the 500 plus business entities he is involved in, what relationships they have," Johnston said.

"We need to see Trump's returns back to the 1990s," he continued. "The Congress can do this under a 1920s law in private, and then we need public hearings about Donald's 30 years of involvement with the Russians."

That's when Williams placed the blame on the American people.

"And there is no one to blame but the American people, correct, that we didn't demand of a candidate for president which what has become the modern political standard, and that is you release your tax returns," Williams said.

"Absolutely," Johnston agreed.
